Overview

Graduate Hospital, located just south of Center City, was named for a large, now-defunct medical institution. Curbed Philadelphia declared it the hottest Philly neighborhood in 2016, and G.Ho’s reputation for trendy, comfortable urban living is well-deserved. Slightly more affordable than Rittenhouse Square, Graduate Hospital’s popularity grew as Center City grew up and out and real estate became completely overpriced, leading residents to nearby areas. Now, Graduate Hospital is hip and desirable in its own right. Geographically, the neighborhood is defined as between South Street and Washington Avenue, and Broad Street to the Schuylkill River.

More about Graduate Hospital

Real estate is hot here. Last year, 98% of all listings were snapped up within 40 days of being put on the market. Redfin says that 8.5% of “hot” Philly homes are in Grad Hospital. And this is all while still maintaining a median home price under a half million dollars.

South Street West is the main drag running through the area, and it is a well-lit, walkable street lined with restaurants, bars, and cafes. The focus is less on high-end dining and drinking and more on folksy, affordable options that tend to become neighborhood hangouts. Grad Hospital’s craft beer scene is gaining legendary status, and the number of unique brews here nearly outnumber the amount of strollers, which is really saying something. Graduate Hospital is definitely family-oriented thanks to good crime ratings and a level of affordability that puts homes within reach of many young professionals. Schools are an ongoing project being undertaken by the community. Neighbors are flocking around Edwin Stanton Elementary and Chester A. Arthur to fundraise, making the schools increasingly more attractive. There is also the Philadelphia Free School nearby. It offers tuition on a sliding scale and features student-led curriculum and involvement in rule-making.

Vibe-wise, Graduate Hospital is artsy. A lot of artists of all mediums flock here, and the neighbors have formed a close-knit community. New arrivals are warmly welcomed.
