Art Musuem Area Is Epicenter of Art Scene

The Art Museum Area, is a neighborhood in Center City, Philadelphia named for its proximity to the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Fairmount, the community in the Art Museum Area directly adjacent to the Art Museum, is named for the large hill on the Philadelphia Museum of Art currently sits and where William Penn planned to build his home.  A handful of European settlers farmed the Art Museum Area in the 17th century, 18th century and early 19th century, when Fairmount was still outside Philadelphia’s city limits. The Art Museum Area boundaries, for real estate purposes, are Vine Street to the South, Girard Avenue to the North, the Schuylkill River to the West, and Broad Street to the East.  Art Museum Area encompasses the Fairmount, Spring Garden, Franklintown, and Francisville neighborhoods.
