Have you visited the SugarHouse Casino in Fishtown recently? If not, you’re in for one heck of a surprise: SugarHouse recently cut the ribbon on a $164 million expansion, one that not only increased the casino’s square footage but also amped its level of sophistication as well.
One of the casino’s newest offerings is Hugo’s Frog Bar & Chop House, a “white-linen” steakhouse that has its roots in Chicago. Its executive chef is Terry White. In a decidedly upscale environment, patrons can enjoy filets and ribeyes and feel like they are getting a truly luxurious experience… and that’s what SugarHouse’s expansion is all about.
May 9th saw the official opening of the expansion, which broke ground back in July 2014. The expansion, which took the casino’s area from 108,000-square-feet to 260,000, was designed by Cope Linder Architects of Philadelphia. The expansion includes the previously-mentioned steakhouse, as well as more casual dining at Geno’s Cheesesteaks, Saxbys Coffee, Tacconelli’s Pizzeria, and more. There are new gaming rooms, filled with 44 new game tables, 289 new slot machines, and a 28-table poker room. There is also the spanking-new Event Center, which has already featured performances by Daily Show host Trevor Noah and ex-Eagles member Don Felder. But the (physically) largest addition to the casino is a 600,000 square-foot, seven-story parking garage.
Doug Harbach, Director of Communications at the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board, told press that, before SugarHouse ever even opened, back in 2010, it had planned to gauge customer response and needs and expand accordingly. Now, the casino heads (including General Manager Wendy Hamilton and CEO Greg Carlin) are thrilled with the expansion and the great response it is getting.
