Students in the city of Philadelphia will get the day off Thursday in order to witness an event that will surely go down in the history books: a victory parade for the Philadelphia Eagles, who just defied the odds by beating the New England Patriots in Superbowl LII. On Sunday, the Philadelphia Eagles (who were heavily expected to lose) came from behind to stop the “dynastic” steamroller of Tom Brady and his five-championship-winning team. What seemed impossible before kickoff quickly turned into a reality as the Eagles carried the league for the entire first quarter, turning it over briefly in the latter half of the game before decisively shutting down the Brady offense and leaving the Pats unable to close the point gap as the last seconds of the game ran out. It was a performance certainly deserving of a parade for the homecoming heroes.

The Eagles will have a homecoming parade on Thursday, and Philadelphia students will be excused from class to see it.

According to NBC 10: “City officials said Monday that the parade will tentatively begin at 11 a.m. at Broad Street and Pattison Avenue in South Philadelphia. The parade will head north on Broad Street to City Hall and then turn up the Benjamin Franklin Parkway ending at the “Rocky Steps” at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.”

Why give kids the day off? “The excitement of the Eagles first Super Bowl victory is a once in a lifetime event. For this reason we have decided to give our students, teachers and their families the chance to witness history,” said Philadelphia schools Superintendent Dr. William R. Hite in an interview. Both primary and secondary, public and parochial schools are closed for the special day.

Even the Archdiocese of Philadelphia had warm words for the Eagles, though football is a decidedly secular pursuit: “The Archdiocese of Philadelphia continues to extend its prayerful congratulations and best wishes to the Philadelphia Eagles on their historic victory in Super Bowl LII! Thank you for bringing the Lombardi Trophy home to the City of Brotherly Love!”
