Amazon has narrowed their hunt for a new HQ city down to 20 contenders, and Philly is on the list!

It’s been several long months of campaigning, but exciting news just came out: Philadelphia has made the shortlist of possible locations for Amazon’s HQ2 project, which will place a second North American headquarters sometime in the next two years. Twenty cities made the list out of the 283 that submitted proposals. Pennsylvania was actually quite lucky in the matter, as Pittsburgh made the cut as well.

Amazon has narrowed their hunt for a new HQ city down to 20 contenders, and Philly is on the list!

Philadelphia, as city mayor Jim Kenney and Governor Tom Wolf have pointed out, would make a great location for Amazon HQ2 because of its location. Positioned strategically on the East Coast, close to Washington D.C., and sporting three potential building sites for the HQ campus, many believe that the City of Brotherly Love is a top contender.

According to Philadelphia Magazine: ”

Amazon plans to invest more than $5 billion in construction of its second headquarters, which it claims will bring in 50,000 high-paying jobs. The online retail giant’s Seattle headquarters resulted in an additional $38 billion to the city’s economy between 2010 and 2016, according to the company.”
It has not been revealed whether the city is offering Amazon any tax incentives or other perks for coming to Philly. The sites up for consideration in the city are the Schuylkill Yards in University City, uCity Square in University City and the Navy Yard.
For its new headquarters, Amazon is seeking a city or metro area with viable real estate options, a highly educated labor pool from which to hire, a thriving university system, travel and logistics needs (including quick access to a major highway corridor and an international airport), and a compatible cultural and community environment in which it can grow.
