The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania-Penn Presbyterian was just one Philadelphia-area hospital to earn accolades on U.S. News and World Report's Honor Roll.

Two Philadelphia hospitals have ranked in the U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Hospitals Honor Roll” for 2017. The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania-Penn Presbyterian ranked number 10 on the prestigious list, while Thomas Jefferson University Hospital came in 16th out of the Top 20. New York City was the only American city to do better on the list, with three institutions (New York-Presbyterian Hospital, Mount Sinai Hospital, and NYU Langone Medical Center) on the list. Los Angeles did as well as Philly, the only other city to have two hospitals on the list: Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center and Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

According to U.S. News & World Report, the top hospital in the country is the Mayo Clinic, in Rochester, Minnesota. The runner up is the Cleveland Clinic and Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland.

In addition to ranking hospitals by overall excellence, the newspaper also broke them down by specialty and ran a top 20 in each category. In addition, institutions were ranked by region For Philadelphia, HUP-Penn Presbyterian came in first based off of high ratings in each of 11 nationally ranked specialties and two procedures or conditions where the hospital was classified as “high performing.” Jefferson pulled up second place, additionally garnering 11 national rankings and two high performing areas. The Rothman Institute at Thomas Jefferson Hospital was number four nationally for orthopedics.

As per the Philadelphia Business Journal, “Other hospitals not in the top 10, but with a nationally ranked specialty area for adults, were: Wills Eye Hospital, second in ophthalmology; MossRehab, 10th in rehabilitation; Magee Rehabilitation Hospital, 13th in rehabilitation; Temple University Health System Fox Chase Cancer Center, 28th in oncology and 40th in ear, nose and throat; and Hahnemann University Hospital, 52nd in urology.”

All the hospitals involved in the lists expressed appreciation and pride in being included in such a noteworthy list.
