The fitness-minded folks of Philadelphia will soon have a new place to get their workout on. Expanding outside of their native New York for the first time, Blink Fitness is opening locations in both North and South Philly. Blink is an innovative gym with a groundbreaking philosophy: “Mood Above Muscle.” It’s based on the idea that people workout to feel good just as much as they do to look good. The idea seems to be grounded in fact: according to a study commissioned by the company, 84% of Philadelphians value feeling great over looking great. I know I can say as a gymgoer that, while the physical benefits are great and undeniable, nothing beats the endorphin rush of a great workout. So I for one am very intrigued by Blink’s model.
“In the last few years, Blink has carved out a much needed space in the industry—one where all gym members can feel comfortable working out with a more approachable outlook on fitness,” said Todd Magazine, President of Blink Fitness in a press release. “We’re excited to finally come to Philadelphia and are confident residents will be receptive to the quality and value they’ll find within our gyms. We look forward to continuing to build Blink’s footprint here.”
Blink Fitness launched in 2011 and has several New York locations. It is planning two more new locations for 2018, with more Philadelphia locations to be announced in the future. The company believes that Philadelphia is a great fit for its first non-New York expansion since the two cities share a lot in common: dense neighborhoods and strong public transportation options for people commuting from the suburbs.
Also from the press release: “The brand new gyms will provide Blink’s signature Feel Good Experience®. Specifically, Blink is committed to providing a modern and colorful design, elevated customer service, relentless focus on cleanliness, energizing music and confidence-boosting training programs—all while offering memberships at a low cost (starting at just $15 per month).”
The first gym is located in South Philly at Whitman Plaza (330 W. Oregon Avenue) and will be opening on Monday, June 19; the second is in North Philly at Academy Road (8491 Frankford Avenue) and will be opening on Thursday, June 22.
