Comcast Business inked a new deal with the City of Philadelphia that promises exciting new changes.

The ink has just dried on a fifteen-year deal between cable giant Comcast Business and the City of Philadelphia. As announced by city officials on Monday morning, the deal will see “significant upgrades” to the broadband network of the municipal government. As part of the agreement, Comcast will help the city build an institutional network, or iNet. Furthermore, the city’s network capacity will be increased five times over thanks to enhanced commercial broadband services. Employees will see faster internet speeds as well.

According to the city, the deal will cut costs while also boosting internet capacity to cloud applications by a multiple of 20. According to the Philadelphia Business Journal, “The city can double bandwidth on network facilities for no additional cost, and is not paying capital costs for 200 new network infrastructure sites. Capital costs for future sites will be offset by an increasing subsidy.”

Comcast Business inked a new deal with the City of Philadelphia that promises exciting new changes.

Mayor Jim Kenney expressed his enthusiasm about the new agreement in a press statement: ““We’re thrilled to be moving forward with Comcast toward a huge upgrade to the City’s network. In this digital age, the network will be the very backbone of our government, and will greatly enhance our ability to provide vital city-services, particularly for the departments of Police, Fire and Emergency Management.”

The deal has other perks as well. Now there will be wi-fi access at eighty of the city’s parks and recreational facilities that didn’t have wireless before. The accounts will be free of charge. The city can now put wireless internet at all its facilities, and the network will be boosted.

Comcast is similarly excited about the new deal, as per David Dombroski, regional vice president for Comcast Business: “This agreement will provide Philadelphia with robust, reliable, and secure services to meet the data network demands of a world class city. Comcast Business will provide a much higher level of performance and be scalable over the long term, while saving the City significant costs. We’re thrilled to offer our hometown the performance and capacity it needs today and into the future.”
