The pizza at Wm. Mulherin's Sons has been praised by Bob Appetit magazine and contributed to it being named as one of the best new restaurants in America.

1.) Two Philadelphia restaurants have landed on Bon Appetit magazine’s list of the best new restaurants in America. One is widely considered to have been a predictable choice, while the other was a pleasant surprise. The expected choice was Wm. Mulherin’s Sons, a “slick” resto with a home in a century-old building that is helmed by renowned local chef Chris Painter. According to Bon Appetit, the restaurant landed on the list based on the merits of its pastas and pizzas, but they were also enamored of the cocktails on the bar’s list. The other eatery to land on the list is South Philly Barbacoa, at which the tortas, tacos, and, naturally, the barbacoa were all praised. Chefs Benjamin Miller and Christina Martinez are to thank for the offerings there. On August 16th, Bon Appetit will announce what restaurants made its Top 10 list.

2.) Gun safety is an issue that’s hot in the news right now, and with good reason. Accidental shootings happen all the time, including, in Philadelphia, the recent death of a 4-year-old girl who got a hold of her mother’s boyfriend’s gun and accidentally shot herself. Inspired by that tragedy, the city is taking steps to make guns safer in residents’ homes. Gun locks will be given away for free, no questions asked, at three locations in the city. These include Fair Hill Square Park, Rose Playground, and 32nd & Cumberland Streets. According to abc6, “Residents may also call the Safe Storage Hotline at 215-686-3572 for information on obtaining gun locks.”

3.) The Philadelphia Eagles are staying on the cutting edge of technology with their new helmet-cams, which they are starting to use in practice right now. The footage from the cameras is supposed to be helpful in giving coaches something to review when looking for mistakes from a fresh perspective. Helmet-cams are gaining in popularity, both in the NFL and the NCAA. The cameras are used during non-contact practices, so that they don’t get damaged. The technology is evolving, however, and now some cameras are being made to be mounted in the front of the helmet, and able to withstand contact.
