Sometimes it’s good to be a member of the media. Visitors to the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia have had to orient themselves to the city and the Wells Fargo Center, where the convention is taking place. There have been huge crowds, trouble with parking (this IS Philly, after all), crowds of protesters to weather… and, yet, there are some upsides as well. Cleveland.com covered the contents of the journalists’ “swag bags,” sacks of goodies that they were given upon arrival in the City of Brotherly Love.

Within the swag bags were items that celebrated the convention, the city, or both. They included refrigerator magnets that said “With Love, Philadelphia;” a luggage tag with a holographic image of the city skyline and the words “See You In Philadelphia” emblazoned on it; “assorted DNC lapel pins;” a K’Nex plane building set to play with during down time; a rain poncho (which undoubtedly came in handy the first morning of the convention, when the skies opened up; a reporter’s pad with a Philadelphia logo on it; a “Delegate and Media Coupon Book;” some EOS lip balm; a water bottle, and antibacterial spray, amongst other goodies.

The DNC swag bags were a sharp contrast to those provided by the Republican National Convention that was held in Cleveland last week in that they did not promote any specific candidate or politician. RNC delegates and media were treated to “a “Make America Great Again!” tote bag filled with a copy of Donald Trump’s book “Crippled America,” a glass tumbler, tissues, a Make America Great Again! hat and a tiny fetus figurine.” Oookay.

Today, drama continues at the DNC following last night’s speeches, mostly coming from dissatisfied Bernie Sanders supporters following leaks of e-mails from higher-ups in the Democratic Party showing that they favored Hillary Clinton as a candidate. Last night’s speeches were interesting, both in terms of content and crowd reaction. My prediction: tonight will be no different.
