Philadelphia has gained a lot of national – and even global – exposure in the past year. In 2015, the City of Brotherly Love was honored by a visit by Pope Francis, and this year it will host the Democratic National Convention. Add to that the fact that Philadelphia has been named by several lists as one of the best cities in which to live, and you have yourself one very cool city.
Now, Philly might be adding another jewel to its crown. The city is said to be a “strong contender” to host the 2017 NFL draft. The event, which is being held this year in Chicago for a second straight year after 51 years of being held at Radio City Music Hall in New York, would bring luminaries of the sports world to Philadelphia, along with countless reporters and commentators. “They’re one of the cities bidding,” NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said in Chicago. “We’re interested in Philadelphia, among other cities.” But some experts say the NFL really has their eye on Philly: ESPN’s Adam Schefter called the city “the leading candidate.” Los Angeles is also in the running and is making a case for why they should be chosen as the draft host city.
The Eagles won’t have a first-round draft pick next year, but Philadelphia getting the draft would add an extra level of interest to the season for the city’s football fans.
A statement from Mayor Kinney’s office: “While it is not our policy to discuss ongoing bid efforts, the City of Philadelphia, the PHLCVB through its business development division PHLSports and our area partners are in constant dialogue with many sports organizations regarding new event opportunities. We look forward to building on our recent great success in hosting world-class events.”
