It’s the number one New Year’s resolution – eat healthier. Whether you are doing it to get into shape or as part of an overall health rehab, you are in great company if you are trying to change the way that you eat. According to a recent piece by CBS Philly, the Philadelphia restaurant scene is making it easier to eat healthy every day.

Vegan food chef Christina Pirello, who heads up ChristinaCooks.com and has a locally-run TV show on which she showcases vegan recipes, says that there’s a wave of vegetarian- and vegan-friendly eats sweeping through Philadelphia. She says this year is only the latest of three decades of progress that she’s seen towards healthier eating and a greater embracing of the fare that veggie-lovers crave. Pirello is currently working on a new project called Christina Bakes, through which she creates plant-based cookies, substituting coconut sugar and brown rice syrup for refined flours and sugars.

She says that this year could be a “tipping point,” since healthy food is moving in on the popular fast/casual dining environment. Pirello says that it is easier now than ever before to eat a good diet at Philadelphia’s eateries. She says that not only has there been an explosion of healthy chain restaurants, but that there is a trend in higher-end local restaurants of highlighting vegetables in dishes, instead of relegating them merely to side dishes or “concealing them to look like a meat dish.” Pirello says that the city is becoming “more vegetable conscious.”

With great veggie restaurants like Vedge and White Dog Cafe enjoying great success in the City of Brotherly Love, it’s believable that more and more similar eateries will move in and continue to thrive.
