Longtime City Council member Jim Kenney will be the next mayor of Philadelphia, as per a resounding victory in the polls yesterday. Outgoing mayor Michael Nutter was restricted by term limits.

Jim Kenney doesn’t have to campaign anymore – he just got elected mayor of Philadelphia.

Focuses of Kenney’s campaign included universal prekinndergarten education and a promise to continue to fight poverty. He has also said that he will push for bail reform, given that thousands of people linger behind bars in Philadelphia awaiting trial.

In his victory speech, which he gave at the National Museum of American Jewish History, Kenney stressed the need for cooperation to assure that goals were met. He said that, “If we all learn to see the world through one another’s eyes, then every Philadelphian will be able to walk our streets safely and with dignity.”

Kenney inherits a Philadelphia that is widely considered to be on the upswing. There are about 1.5 million residents, many of them the millennials and empty-nesters who have prompted a building boom in the way of condos, new restaurants, and other development. Philadelphia gained national and worldwide attention in a positive light this fall when it hosted Pope Francis during his visit to the United States.
Philadelphia’s biggest area of concern in the eyes of many is its school system. The situation is bad enough that there are residents who leave the area when their children hit school age. An NBC10/Telemundo62 poll conducted during the Democaratic primary in May in conjuction with the Philadelphia Inquirer, Daily News and Philly.com showed that citizens are most concerned about improving schools.
