It’s an exciting day to be a Philadelphia 76ers fan! The team just unveiled a new logo suite. Fresh and exciting, the new logo should get fans pumped in advance of this year’s NBA lottery and draft. The new logos are effective immediately and come in advance of the NBA draft lottery, set to take place next week on May 19th.
The logo change wasn’t a dramatic one, and actually was more of a re-imagining. The new primary logo is a spin on the classic 76ers insignia, but circled in bright, patriotic blue with six stars and the word “Philadelphia” on the band. The classic white basketball has been rotated so that the seams are in a different position. There’s still a ring of 13 stars meant to symbolize the 13 original American colonies. One of two secondary logos shows Benjamin Franklin in a blue coat (emblazoned with “76ers”) and red knickers dribbling a basketball.
The logos are only part of a new “visual identity” for the 76ers, including the exciting addition of new uniforms. The uniforms will be unveiled to the public on June 18th at an event to be held at the Wells Fargo Center. Attendees will be treated to “a series of dynamic digital displays and interactive elements” (as per a press release) as well as a first glimpse of the team’s new uniforms. Former players will be present, including Billy Cunningham, Darryl Dawkins, Moses Malone, Bobby Jones and Allen Iverson.
Fan response to the new logos has been positive, especially as the change was not dramatic or really controversial in any way.
