no catcalling

Is there anything more aggravating, as a woman, than being harassed on the street? Catcalls and inappropriate comments might be intended to flatter, but instead they tend to insult and bother the person at which they are directed. Now, however, catcallers in Philadelphia (and New York City) might pause a moment before opening their mouths.

no catcalling

This sign was spotted in Fishtown by Philly.com staff.

Official-looking “No Catcalling” and “No Catcall Zone” signs, which imitate No Parking signs, have been appearing in both Philly and New York. The signs are the collaborative work of nonprofit clothing company Feminist Apparel and the Philly-based feminist group Pussy Initiative. Some of the signs are text-only, while others feature minimalist depictions of a cat shooting lasers out if its eyes at two jeering male figures. The groups say that the signs are designed to bring awareness to the issue of street harassment, which is faced by countless women every day. The signs were unveiled in time for International Anti-Street Harassment Week.

The signs, however, might not be long for this world. In New York City, the Department of Transportation has started taking them down, despite having received no complaints about the signs, as they are unauthorized. There is no word yet as to Philadelphia’s official reaction to the signs.

One thing is for sure: regardless of amusing signage, street harassment needs to be stamped out. Hopefully the signs help to bring awareness to the issues faced by women in Philadelphia – and everywhere – on a daily basis. If even one erstwhile catcaller takes note and decides to change their ways, the initiative should be classified as a success.
