Quarterback Tim Tebow will join the Philadelphia Eagles for at least one season, say sources. Tebow, who won the Heisman Trophy as a college player, hasn’t played in the NFL for the past three years. The dedicated Christian and former UF quarterback has been working as a commentator since 2012, but now it looks like Philly will be the team to put him back in the game. Tebow’s popularity hasn’t waned, but until now he’s lacked for a team willing to give him another chance after a few years of disappointing performances.
Although Tebow is joining the Eagles, he won’t be coming on as the starting quarterback. It’s unlikely that he will even become the first backup, in fact. It may be that the best he can hope for is third. Still, it speaks to the Eagles’ faith in Tebow that they are even giving him a chance back in the big game. Philadelphia is willing to take a chance on a wild card like Tebow given the fact that they have nothing to lose – the team has never won a Superbowl and won’t have any prospects of doing so unless they shake things up.
Of course, this isn’t the Eagles’ first time taking a chance on a player. The team got plenty of press when they welcomed Michael Vick to the team after Vick got out of prison for his role in an illegal dogfighting ring. Things worked out and Vick ultimately signed a six-year contract with the Eagles (he has since switched teams and gone over to the Jets). The team is undoubtedly hoping that Tebow will follow a similar trajectory.
