The 5th annual Philadelphia Science Festival is about to take place at the Franklin Institute. Celebrating the science that takes place all across this part of the state, the festival invites science fiends of all ages to get hands-on with events on science and technology. The festival is family-friendly and will delight both amateur and hardcore enthusiasts. Consisting of over 100 events throughout the state, the width and breadth of the festival covers the full extent of science in Pennsylvania. Of the events, 72 are focused on families, 16 are aimed at adults, and 19 are intended for educators.
The first event will be “After Hours 8-Bit Night” at the Franklin Institute, an adults-only event dedicated to dissecting classic video games. Participants are invited to investigate the innards of an old arcade machine to discover how it works, to learn more about the functions of old video games, and to play “Galactica” on the dome of the Fels Planetarium. Another event will focus on the beautiful night sky, with local astronomers at 25 different sites throughout the region for “the biggest star-gazing party” around. Families can participate on Discovery Day on April 25th, which will feature numerous events throughout the area aimed at kids and families learning about science.
Larry Dubinski, President and CEO of the Franklin Institute, calls the festival one of the nation’s best. He says that attendees will not only develop a new appreciation for science and technology, but will also learn about how science and technology surround them every day.
Dubinski calls Philadelphia “a city that lives and breathes science,” a science city in many ways.
