Philadelphia is known for plenty of things. We have the Liberty Bell, the cheesesteaks… and Rocky. There are few movie scenes as iconic to a particular place as the one in which Rocky (played by the inimitable Sylvester Stallone) runs up the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art as “Gonna Fly Now” plays in the background. Rocky, a champion boxer with an indomitable spirit, is the city’s favorite fictional son. That’s why it’s so exciting that Sly Stallone is back in town filming yet another sequel to the award-winning series.

Stallone was sighted in South Philly this week working on “Creed,” the latest spin-off in the “Rocky” series. It will focus on the grandson of Apollo Creed, Rocky’s rival from the first movies. Rocky, now much older, is helping to train the grandson to become a champion.

The actor and crew were filming on the 1300 block of Wharton Street, which was shut down for the day. A storefront on the block was masquerading as “Adrian’s,” a fictional eatery, with a hanging sign and green awnings. The film crew has been seen in multiple locations around town as they shoot the movie, working around the snow on the ground.

Stallone was happy and gracious with fans, waving hello and taking pictures with his smartphone. Earlier this year he snapped selfies with fans who raced him up the “Rocky steps.” Clearly, the actor is enjoying the experience of stepping back into Rocky’s shoes for another theatrical outing.

“Creed” is due to hit theaters on November 25th this year.
