On Trend: Beautiful Brick

This post is an ode to exposed brick. One of the most universally-beloved, most-requested design elements, brick makes a home feel simultaneously cozy and inviting and delightfully modern. It’s a timeless look with appeal that transcends individual taste. Whether fiery red or muted pink, it matches everything and always looks great.

Take a look, for instance, at 722 N. 2nd Street, Apt. 202. This 2-bed, 3-bath loft-style condo looks simply splendiferous by itself with exposed ductwork and beams and high cathedral ceilings, but the wealth of glorious exposed brick really takes it over the top.

Here’s a few tips and things to know when it comes to your home’s bodacious brick walls:

1.) Hanging pictures can be a real pain, but it’s not impossible. If you are in a rental, say the pros, it’s best to hold off on drilling altogether, because matching the mortar to patch it afterwards is almost impossible. Otherwise, think super-strong masonry drill bits and tap-in anchors.

2.) Think twice, paint once. Painted brick definitely has its own appeal, but know that it will be exceedingly tough to restore the brick to its barefaced original beauty if you ever tire of the color. Sandblasting or muriatic acid washes can sometimes do the trick, but it’s best to view any changes as permanent.

3.) Brick does a great job keeping you warm and dry, but it has to be properly sealed. If the bricks or mortar have begun to go crumbly and old, you may need to bring a pro in to repoint or seal your wall so it doesn’t let in moisture, pests, or temperature extremes… or all of the above!

4.) Constructing your own brick wall? Make a great color choice. Dark red brick makes the most dramatic statement and has the most “pop,” but too much of it can make a space look dark. Light brick imparts an airy, roomy quality to a room.
