Philly 10k Brings Neighborhoods to Center Stage

Philly runners enjoy riches aplenty when it comes to outstanding races and events. We’re an active city, and it shows. The thing about most Philly races, though, is that they all look the same. I mean, the riverfront is totally gorgeous and all, but the scenery can get fairly tedious after a few good runs. (Am I the only runner who leans heavily on my surroundings to entertain me while I’m ostensibly exercising? Anyone?)

The Philly 10k is different. Possibly the first-ever race to bring runners through the “real” city, the 10k is breaking new ground with its course. A circuit of over six miles draws a large loop of Center City and South Philly, inclusive of no less than a dozen neighborhoods. This is an event that brings the city to center stage, shining a spotlight on the places where real Philadelphians live, play, and work.

The 10k is the brainchild of Philadelphia Runner, a local business with three locations catering to the wants and needs of area runners. Bryan Mahon, who owns the stores, was instrumental in bringing the new race to life with his vision of cruising through iconic Philly nabes on a 10k circuit. Accordingly, the course begins and ends in East Passyunk, wending through Bella Vista, Midtown, Callowhill, Old City, Society Hill, Queen Village and Pennsport along the way.

Race participants will be treated to a free beer from the Philadelphia Brewing Company and a cannoli-infused custard concoction from Termini Brothers. The post-race celebration kicks off at 9:30 and extends until noon, with a later afterparty still to be TBD.

Registration for the Philly 10k kicks off Monday, May 12th, at 10am. Participation will be limited to the first 3,000 runners to sign up, so stake your claim now! Tix are $55 if you buy now through May 31, and $75 after that and up to the day of the race.
