Try It This Weekend: Strangelove’s Beer Bar

One of the country’s great American beer bars is right here in Center City. Looking for a great place to knock back a few brews and stuff yourself with delicious southern comfort food? (Rhetorical question, obvs – the answer is clearly “yes.”) Get thee over to Strangelove’s.

The beer bar-cum-eatery is the brainchild of Leigh Maida and Brendan Hartranft, the adorable husband-wife/business partner team that also brought us West Philly’s Local 44, Memphis Taproom of Kensington, and Graduate Hospital’s Resurrection Ale House. These are folks who know their brew and food. Lauded over and over  – by critics near as Philly Mag and far as the bigwigs at Zagat’s – for the food, atmosphere, and craft beers at their funky-fresh quartet of neighborhood eateries, this duo is a prime example of local boys and girls making good. And boy, do they ever.

Brew-o-philes will geek out over Strangelove’s robust beer menu, which includes two casks and eighteen taps, including beloved choices like John Courage Imperial Stout. There are both brunch and regular menus. The former is heavy on the decadent delectables of steel magnolias – the shrimp & grits and cannoli french toast can get in my tummy right now, kthnx – while the latter mixes Dixie sensibilities with pub grub favorites. There’s fried tomatoes, catfish or shrimp po’boys, and a hearty (if not healthy) selection of burgers, salads, and sinfully-sounding desserts. Green eaters of all stripes will appreciate the generous selection of vegetarian and vegan choices.

Maida and Hartranft transformed the old Doc Watson’s space on Walnut and Locust into two stories of moody, eclectic awesomeness appropriate for Strangelove’s slightly-weird, slightly-romantic name – which Maida has publicly confirmed has nothing to do with Kubrick.
