Philly Gyms with Fun Fitness Classes

We all know that exercise is a necessary evil, and for some of us, there’s a big emphasis on the “evil.” The thought of partaking in the Broad Street Run is torturous and we’d rather die than enter that CrossFit building. Luckily, Philadelphia is the place to be if you want to take some fitness classes that make exercise seem like a hobby rather than a chore. Looking to get in shape while doing a little something different? Here are five places right in the confines of our city that are worth checking out.

Sweat Fitness, Multiple Locations

Sweat Fitness is a convenient gym to join due to its nine locations, which include Center City, Fitler Square, Manayunk, South Philly, and East Falls. However, its loyal visitors aren’t there because it’s convenient, they’re there because it’s fun. Taking a look at this season’s schedule, you’ll notice that some of their classes include swimming, like “Splash and Burn” and “Aqua Motion.” The rest of their classes appeal to every audience: “Kettelbell,” “XXX Tone,” and even “Dance Party Boot Camp.”

Lithe Method, Multiple Locations

There are three Lithe Method locations: Rittenhouse, Old City, and Main Line. This fitness center aims to inspire its visitors to “lead fit, hip, healthy lives,” through innovative courses and information sessions. One of their classes is called “Pom” and appeals to the upbeat athlete in you – it’s a cardio-sculpting class combined with cheerleading to keep it high-energy. If that’s not your bag, you could also check out “Waspie,” a class that uses ceiling-suspended resistance bands to work the midsection.

Sussex Fitness Center, Broomall

Sussex Fitness Center is worth the drive for one reason: “Drums Alive.” This class is a cutting-edge trend in fitness that combines music-making with aerobics and sculpting. Participants are given an exercise ball and drumsticks to hit them with, creating pulsating rhythms to dance to while giving your arms a workout. It’s one of the most fun fitness classes in the area right now, so if you find it hard to get moving, give it a shot.

Philadelphia School of Circus Arts, Avenue of the Arts

Need we say more? It doesn’t get much less boring than circus arts. Like the members of Cirque de Soleil, at Philly Circus youths and adults alike can learn to do aerial stunts on trapezes, aerial silks, and lyra. Learn to unicycle, walk a tightwire, tumble, or even juggle – it’s like a childhood dream come true! All of these practices take amazing strength and control of the body, so you’ll have a blast while getting into the best shape of your life.

Ploome, Northern Liberties

Every class at Ploome in NoLibs is unique and sure to be a new experience for you. Take “Rage Against the Machine” if you want to get in both strength and cardio by climbing a tower wall unit, conquer a Wunda Chair, and test your agility on a jumpboard. Or, attend “Toy Time,” which exactly like your favorite part of gym class: hula hoops, fire fans, and Maori poi teach you agility and meditation while burning calories. It’s the only fitness center in Philly that partakes in Champagne Sundays – because even fitness freaks have to indulge once in a while.
