A Sweet Piece of “Heaven” Comes to West Philly!

College students and cake go together like pb&j, peas & carrots, and other stellar combos… man, can you tell we’re hungry? Penn students – and everyone else nearby – will be able to feed their need for sweets now that Pound Cake Heaven has opened its second location and brought some much-needed business (and a scrumptious smell!) to 50th and Baltimore.

We love this fun football cake – could make a great addition to your Superbowl party next week!

The family-owned business has been wowing ‘em with scrumptious signature pound cakes and other baked confections at their flagship location in Yeadon for the last two years. Owner Pamela Thorton says that her bakery is something of a goodie oasis, since few similar businesses exist west of the Schuylkill. Cupcakes may have been the big trend of the Oughts, with chi-chi patisseries like Magnolia Bakery of NYC keeping lines out the door, but the emerging trend of this decade has been everything and anything pastry… the more innovative, the better. (See, for example, the blockbuster trajectory of the cronut.)

The shop customizes for a variety of occasions and we thought these school themed ones were pretty cute (and they look tasty!). Of note is that they have a diverse walk-in menu of treats too and the lemon pound cake gets raves.

The Pound Cake Heaven menu reads like the living epitome of your every single sugar-laden daydream. The eponymous cakes come in all kinds of flavors, from traditional tastes like lemon and butter sour cream to more outre offerings: sweet potato, 7-Up, and pina colada. In addition, Thorton & co. serve up drool-worthy layer cakes and pies, and a rotating assortment of baked treats that include brownies, cannoli, and tarts, as well as several sugar-free snacks. Custom wedding cakes are available as well.

Pound Cake Heaven is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 ‘til 7, and Sundays from 10 ‘til 3. Penn students get a discount with valid ID.
