The 747 Wing House is one of the most unique residential structures I have seen, made from the wings of a Boeing 747 Aircraft. David Hertz, the architect that lead the team of designers to build this structure, had the wings flown in my helicopter ( for a mere $18,000 an hour) and 18 wheeler trucks. Just to give you an idea of how large these parts are, the scale of a 747 is over 230 feet long, 195 feet wide and 63 feet tall. The client, a woman, requested curvilinear and feminine shapes for the building. The home was built on 55 acre property northwest of Malibu, California at the Western edge of the Santa Monica Mountains.
To minimize obstructions to the beautiful scenic landscape, Hertz designed the home so the roof would be strictly made of airplane wings on all 3 levels of the home. Very little walls were required for vertical support. The entire structure of the home is built of frameless glass panels and eco friendly, lightweight material. The client purchased the airplane for $30,000, which actually was originally worth $250,000,000. The designers had to get clearance from 17 government agencies to disassemble and move the parts which were transported in the evening by way of closed highway lanes with police patrol following. The wings were so large they had to be cut in half just for transport and were later put back together. After some research was conducted with the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration), it was discovered that the roof of the structure had to be registered with the administration so pilots flying overhead don’t mistake it for a downed aircraft. The home was completed in 2011, and has gained a lot of recognition worldwide for its design, sustainability and unique build.
