Historical Commission OK’s New Old City Building

At a recent meeting of the Historical Commission, the firm of HarmanDeutsch gained final approval for its design of a proposed Old City building at intersection of 3rd and Chestnut.

HarmanDeutsch had appeared two times previously before the Commission’s Architecture Committee and been denied approval.

The five-story project falls under the jurisdiction of the Historical Commission because the previous building was listed consider to be contributing to the Old City Historic District.  The previously existing building was built in 1894 and was demolished following a January 2004 fire that severely damaged it.

The developer intends to create four rental apartments above one retail space

The reworked design, following suggestions of the Committee includes sills and lintels to the facade’s dozen windows, and end details to a still-modest cornice. The storefront is also wider, and its door is centered.
