Gas Explosion Causes Philadelphia Home to Collapse

At least three row houses were  rocked on the 400 block of Daly Street by a natural gas explosion in a Philadelphia neighborhood Monday, sending at least eight people to nearby hospitals.  People were getting hosed down who were badly burned and a baby, who was hurt by flying glass, was thrown from a 2nd story window to safety into a firefighters arms. A contractor was doing rehab work in a vacant home when it collapsed, and the two adjacent houses were  destroyed with it. One person was in critical condition as of lastnight with severe burns, while others involved were treated for minor injuries who were inside the home next to the collapse.

Dozens of homes were evacuated Monday afternoon while officials searched the area for evidence. Everyone on the block had been accounted for, but fire officials were using listening devices to make sure there was nobody left behind.

Pictures of the horrific scene show a large pile of rubble between two buildings, and the destruction it caused.

A quote from a neighbor who heard the blast from his bedroom; Joe Szymborski said “I threw on my shoes, ran down there and helped three people out of the house, It’s just instinct. Anybody would do it for anybody else around here. We’re all neighbors and friends.” he said.

The home where the blast occurred  had all of the correct permits, officials have said. Authorities are investigating to determine what caused the gas leak and in the meantime, service has been shut off.

This is all too familiar in Philadelphia where last month, a four-story wall of a vacant building in Philadelphia collapsed onto a Salvation Army thrift store, killing six people and injuring more than 13.
