Pumpkin Parklet Opens Sept 21 In Graduate Hospital

Just got an email from SOSNA with some exciting news for the Philadelphia Real Estate community:

Introducing the Pumpkin Parklet – As part of the Parklet Pilot Program from the Mayor’s Office of Transportation and Utilities (MOTU), SOSNA was awarded a $5,000 grant to bring the first parklet to the neighborhood outside Pumpkin Market, 1610 South Street. Earlier this year, MOTU did an open call for applications from businesses and civics around Philadelphia to construct parklets, offering $5,000 to assist in their construction. The SOSNA/Pumpkin application was one of six grants awarded. Stop by Pumpkin Market on Friday September 21st to see our newest public space.

Here’s some more info from the SOSNA website:

What is a Parklet? Parklets are small platforms that take the place of parking, with seats and tables that allow people to stop, sit and enjoy their neighborhood street life. They can act like a front porch or stoop to hang out on. Recently, Logan unveiled its new parklet at Wagner Avenue and Old York Road.

What are the benefits of Parklets? Parklets are for the enjoyment of all Philadelphians. Though mostly located outside businesses, parklets are public spaces. Previously installed parklets attract people from all over eager to experience new public space, and nearby businesses can see a 20% boost in revenue.

How long will the Pumpkin Parklet be up? As part of participating in the City’s Pilot and RFP program, all parklets are only seasonal, roughly April to October. This year, the Pumpkin Parklet will be dismantled on October 22. But it will be back in April 2013 for its first full season on South Street West.

What will the Pumpkin Parklet look like? Designed by Johnston Stromberg Architecture (based at 18th and South Streets), the Pumpkin Parklet will look like . . . (see above).

Very exciting news for Center City and Graduate Hospital.  Stop by and check Pumpkin Parklet out!
