Red Bull recently announced it will host the Red Bull Flugtag 2012 Philadelphia on September 15th at the Camden Waterfront at 2 Riverside Drive, Camden, New Jersey 08103. Red Bull Flugtag 2012 Philadelphia challenges teams of everyday people to build homemade, human-powered flying machines and pilot them off a 30-foot high deck in hopes of achieving flight! Flugtag may mean “flying day” in German, but all these crafts ultimately splash into the waters below. They are judged not only on their flight’s distance, but creativity and showmanship as well.
What makes for a good flying machine and crew at Red Bull Flugtag 2012 Philadelphia?
Your Red Bull Flugtag 2012 Philadelphia team should consist of one fearless pilot and four people to aid in takeoff. Only self-constructed gliders with a max wingspan of 30 feet and a max weight of 450 pounds (including pilot) will be cleared for launch. And start looking at your friends’ calves, because your craft must be completely human-powered. Only pilots over the age of 18 can fly in Red Bull Flugtag 2012 Philadelphia. We would make it younger, but legally you can’t sign your life away until then.
How are Red Bull Flugtag 2012 Philadelphia teams chosen to participate?
Red Bull Flugtag 2012 Philadelphia is a single day of high-flying thrills, so the number of pilots is limited. Teams are chosen based on information they provide on the application, which you can find right here on our site. And since personality is as important as craftsmanship, you’re also asked to submit a one-minute video introducing the flight crew. A special event committee then sorts through all the applications and clears roughly 40 human-powered flying machines for takeoff.

Buoyancy probably isn’t in your blueprint, so swimming better be one of your many skills, though Red Bull will provide you with a helmet and life jacket.
