I mentioned last week that members of the Logan Square Neighborhood Association, as individuals, have prepared and submitted a proposed nomination of Coxe Park to the Philadelphia Register of Historic Places. After looking into the issue further it seems that there is some dispute as to whether or not this status is in the best interest of Coxe Park or Logan Square. The Friends of Coxe Park, a local neighborhood advocacy group that seeks to revitalize and maintain Coxe Park and Playground, oppose the nomination on the grounds that the historic designation will slow or hault efforts to repair, update and modernize the playground.
Here’s a segment of an email distributed this week by the FOCP:
If you were unable to attend the February 27 meeting of the Committee on Historic Designation, you can get fully up to speed by visiting our website, www.friendsofcoxepark.org. The Committee narrowly voted to recommend approval of the pending nomination for historic designation, which if approved would restrict the community’s flexibility to make future improvements at Coxe Park. However, that was only the first step in the process and the Philadelphia Historical Commission will make the official decision on the nomination this Friday, March 9 – all are welcome to attend! We are extremely grateful to everyone who has taken the time to write a letter opposing the nomination and/or voice their opinions at last week’s meeting. Our energy has already generated some positive attention and is critical to persuading the Commission to vote against the nomination.
If you would like to oppose the historic designation for Coxe Park please submit a letter to the historic commission at the address below.
Philadelphia Historical Commission

Note in the re: line your opposition to the historic designation of Coxe Park and be sure to include your address.
You may submit your letter by e-mail to [email protected] up until this Thursday night or you may even bring your letter to the hearing on Friday. Of course we would love to see as many people as possible attend the meeting of the Historical Commission this Friday at 9:00 a.m. at 1515 Arch Street, Room 18-029 to voice your opposition in person.
