Pennsylvania Ballet to Break Ground on Avenue of the Arts
Philadelphia Real Estate Blog – Pennsylvania BalletThe Pennsylvania Ballet company plans to begin construction at 321 N. Broad St. on a $17.5 million project that will contain five dance studios, offices, and other facilities for the School of the Pennsylvania Ballet building. The Pennsylvania Ballet company received donations totaling $11.2 million that will go towards the demolition of an existing building and renovation of a former garage into four dance studios. The building will be called that Louise Reed Center for Dance and it will be a state of the art dance facility and will have a green roof. Doors will open in Fall 2012 for students. The Louise Reed Center for Dance is the focal point of the company’s upcoming 50th anniversary.
The Pennsylvania ballet was founded in 1963 by Barbara Weisberger, a protégée of George Balanchine, and has been a Philadlephia cultural icon since its inception. Interestingly, fourteen members of the Pennsylvania Ballet appeared as the corps in the film Black Swan starring Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis.
