Philadelphia Real Estate Blog – UPenn Shoemaker GreenPlanPhilly reports that over in the University City neighborhood UPenn has begun construction on the latest PennConnects project called Shoemaker Green. Shoemaker Green is a 3.75 acre public green space that links the UPenn campus to recently completed Penn Park and thus to Center City Philadelphia. The space was formerly used as tennis courts and the completed projected will create green space for informal play and leisure. The total cost of the project is $8,000,000 and the proposed completion is Fall of 2012.
Here’s the complete description of the project from the UPenn website:
Shoemaker Green will become a new public commons, a welcoming open space of lawns, tree-lined walkways, and sitting areas. This new green space will be both a destination and a pedestrian route from Locust and Smith Walks in the core of campus to the historic buildings surrounding the space and further eastward to the new Penn Park. Shoemaker Green sustainable site management will improve water quality and minimize runoff, reduce the effect of the urban heat island by greening large paved areas, restore biomass on site, increase local biodiversity, and improve the overall environment for the community.
