Old City and Northern Liberties Spotlighted In October GQ Magazine

Philadelphia Real Estate Blog – Old City Neighborhood

Uwishunu blogged about an article on Philadelphia in the October issue of GQ magazine. The article, “A GQ City Guide: Philly, Without the Cheese” focuses on hotspots in the Old City, Northern Liberties, and Fishtown Neighborhoods.

No, Philadelphia has not suddenly turned into Miami. But you’ll find stores that get it right, kick-ass BYO restaurants, and bars that care more about local craft beers than the Eagles game. Call it Philly’s awakening  Philly has a rep as the capital of eighth-grade field trips and binge-drinking b-school bros doing their best Situation impressions, but this place has bigger ambitions if you know where to look. You’ll find all the buzzy trappings of Brooklyn—pitch-perfect menswear shops in Old City, straight-shooting restaurants and microbrew-soaked nightlife in Northern Liberties—without all the Brooklyn smugness. Here’s how to navigate the new Philly revolution.

Here’s the list of Old City and NoLibs hotspots as well as the commentary from the GQ article:

Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction – 116 N. 3rd St, Philadelphia, PA 19106 – Old City Neighborhood –

Hit this hipster general store for rotating art exhibitions on exposed brick walls, clothes fit for a weekend at your cabin in the Poconos, and signature Root liquor—a spicy, boozy concoction that all the locals keep in their flasks

A.K.A. Music – 27 N. 2nd St, Philadelphia, PA 19106 – Old City Neighborhood

One of the best record stores on the East Coast. The crowd is equal parts in-the-know college kids and invented-the-know bearded men trolling an airplane hangar’s worth of LPs.

Reward – 55 N. 2nd St, Philadelphia, PA 19106 – Old City Neighborhood

The mainstay labels here—think Comune and Opening Ceremony—are the staples of the Philly sartorialist’s uniform.

Sugarcube – 124 N. 3rd St, Philadelphia, PA 19106 – Old City Neighborhood

No, the midcentury motorcycle in the middle of the store isn’t for sale. But with the stacks of Pendleton and Steven Alan shirts and the smartly edited vintage racks in back, you’ll do all right. 124

Farmicia – 15 S. 3rd St, Philadelphia, PA 19106 – Old City Neighborhood

Once you’ve topped off your wardrobe, eat lunch at Philly’s best farm-to-table joint. Order the blueberry-glazed duck, then catch a cab over to Northern Liberties before the frat-holes commandeer Old City’s nightlife.

The Foodery – 837 N. 2nd St, Philadelphia, PA 19123 – Northern Liberties Neighborhood

This is a BYO kinda town, and if you’d rather pair dinner with a pilsner than a Petite Sirah, this bottle shop is your first stop. Don’t be ashamed to ask for help digging through its 900 craft beers.

Modo Mio – 161 W. Girard Ave, Philadelphia, PA 19123 – Northern Liberties Neighborhood

Yes, it’s BYO, but even better, just $38 gets you four courses, including everything from handmade pasta to a highbrow take on sausage, (duck) egg, and (aged provolone) cheese.

Sonata – 1030 N. American St, Philadelphia, PA 19123 – Northern Liberties Neighborhood

You’ll tweet shots of the invent, i’ve deconstructed lobster “potpie,” but it’s the bacon-wrapped, chestnut-stuffed chicken you’ll wish you could order again for dessert.

Johnny Brenda’s – 1201 N. Frankford Ave, Philadelphia, PA 19125 – Fishtown Neighborhood

A divey bar with a rowdy side. Homegrown DJs keep the party young while pints of IPA, APA, and regular-ass pale ale keep it loud.

Honey’s Sit-N-Eat – 800 N. 4th St, Philadelphia, PA 19123 – Northern Liberties Neighborhood.

Where the last-call crowd fights back a hangover with strong coffee and oversize portions of vaguely Jewish down-home cooking. (Do you want more challah with your omelet?)
