Market Street and JFK Boulevard Transformed For Bikers

Philadelphia Real Estate Blog – Market Street

The city of Philadelphia will the city will be closing the left-most lane of traffic on Market Street and John F. Kennedy Boulevard between 15th and 20th streets for the next two weeks in order to test an idea proposed by the Center City District two years ago.  The idea is that these two major roadways could be made more more pedestrian and bike friendly without a significant effect on local traffic.  Both streets will have three lanes open to vehicle traffic and no parking spots will be lost in the experiment.  The original proposal was to have both streets run both East and West but that idea was shot down because of the fear of increasing traffic.  Local building owners are supportive of the endeavor and the creation of a bike like for Center City professionals to use.  This transformation of underused street space is the follow up to the “parklets” that starting popping up in late summer.
