Paint Torch and Grumman Greenhouse For Lenfest Plaza
In what I think is a really cool story, sculptor, and 2008 Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art graduate, Jordan Griska will install a bent, decommissioned Cold War submarine bomber airplane into the ground next to his alma mater.
Philadelphia Real Estate Blog – Grumman GreenhouseInstallation is set for today through Thursday if the weather cooperates. Lenfest Plaza’s formal opening will be this Saturday and will include activities, a paintbrush lighting, and other festivities. The Academy of Fine Arts dedicated space for temporary installations to recognize beginner and mid-career artists. Each piece selected will be viewable for approximately one year.
Griska, complete with his West Philadelphia old trolley shed art studio, seems like the real deal. The artist, known for his work with “found objects”, was suggested by an Academy panel of faculty and administration. Griska conveyed to the panel his ambitious proposal and once approved Griska did what anyone is his position would do – he got on Ebay and purchased a Grumman S-2 Tracker, about 45 feet long and 75 feet wide.
Once installed, the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society will assist in covering the former bomber into an artistic planter with edible plants whose produce will be donated to City Harvest for low-income families.
As previously mentioned, Grumman Greenhouse will joing Claes Oldenburgs’s Paint Torch which was recently installed at Broad and Cherry and will be lit during an opening ceremony this Saturday. Oldenburg is known worldwide and most notably in Philadelphia for his 1976 Clothespin across from City Hall
