Philadelphia Responds To Flash Mobs With Curfew

Mayor Michael Nutter announced this week an initiative aimed at preventing flash mob violence that began with a stiff curfew at 9 p.m. Friday, August 12, 2011.  The curfew comes as a response to three of attacks on residents by groups of young people who were alerted to sudden gatherings at a given place via e-mail and social media.  The Mayor signed an order temporarily moving the curfew to 9 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays for everyone under the age of 18 in targeted enforcement districts – Center City and University City.  For the rest of the city the curfew will remain 10 p.m. for those under the age of 13 and those for minors under the age of 18.  Minors AND PARENTS of those who are caught breaking curfew or partaking in flash mob violence can be detained, arrested, imprisoned and subject to fines for offenses. Minors and their parents may also be liable to parties who suffered injuries or loss of property in some instances.  By the sounds of it the City is taking serious steps to put an end to flash mob violence.  A good idea considering the negative press resulting from flash mobs landed our city on the front page of CNN.com twice this week.
