Delaware River Waterfront Corporation Begins Preliminary Work on Festival Pier
PlanPhilly.com is reporting that the Delaware River Waterfront Corporation will begin “pre-development” environmental remediation and planning work that must take place prior to selection of a private developer. Specifically work is being done at the site of a former incinerator, demolished in the early 2000’s, that took up 7 of the 11.5 acres being developed. The current plan for the Central Delaware includes residential and mixed-use development at the intersection of Delaware Avenue and the foot of Spring Garden Street. The fact that the area is owned by a quasi government agency makes the transformation of the area is much more in the public’s control than privately owned riverfront property. This is obviously exciting news for the Northern Liberties neighborhood and the entire city of Philadelphia. Philadelphia’s embarrassingly bad use of riverfront real estate will soon be a thing of the past!
