Cecil Baker + Partners is proud that York Square, designed by the firm, has become a local exemplar of urban infill. The York Square condominium building respects the scale and character of the neighborhood while meeting the needs and desires of contemporary urban dwellers.  Occupying the site of a former automobile service station in the Old City neighborhood of Philadelphia, the U-shaped York Square plan surrounds a landscaped entry courtyard that opens south, onto a small scaled street. The York Square parking garage hides underground. The building volume rises to meet the height of an existing adjacent warehouse and steps back at the street corners to echo the rhythms of smaller rowhouse structures across the street. Materially, the exterior responds to the formerly industrial landscape through the use of brick and zinc panels, yet in patterns that are distinctly of the 21st century, gracefully marrying the forms of the past with the language of the present.

York Square contains sixty live/work loft units in a 100,000 square feet building. Residents at York Square enjoy 10-foot ceiling heights and open floor plans with clean contemporary lines. The building includes balconies and terraces, oversized bay windows, and two story penthouse units. The York Square spaces are bright and evoke the spirit of the buildings that once populated this area of the city. Through the introduction of a new residential program and contextual sensitivity, York Square strengthens the local fabric, maintains neighborhood character, and has quickly become a treasured addition to Old City. York Square received a 10,000 Friends of Pennsylvania Commonwealth Design Award in 2004.
