New Philly Steakhouse Keeps Traditions Alive

The recently-reno’d Atlantic building at Broad and Spruce Streets just south of City Hall will house an enormous new high-end steakhouse come springtime. Steak 48, a Midwestern chain, will fill the 12,000 square foot space left vacant by former steakhouses Ruth’s Chris and Ted’s Montana Grill on the first floor. The upper floors of the Atlantic are dedicated to swanky apartments designed by the same artist behind the nearby Kimmel Center. The building is a 1920s-vintage office tower that, like so many Center City edifices, has gained new life in the last ten years.

But back to the “meat” of the story. Steak 48 will dish out all the classic steakhouse mains that you’d expect: filet mignon, bone-in rib eye, New York strip, and whole Colorado rack of lamb. Market-fresh seafood will also be on offer, showcasing some of the best catches of the season like whole lobster tails and Chilean sea bass. Coming along for the ride are the usual suspects of side dishes: au gratin potatoes, wedge salads, and roasted Brussels sprouts. Big spenders can splash out on prized, buttery American Wagyu, served at market price.

The eatery will be massive, with 450 seats, but the layout is designed to feel cozy and intimate by being broken into unique, inviting spaces. This includes a sweeping mezzanine.

The owners of Steak 48 are looking to hire no less than 300 cooks, servers, hosts, and other staff for the new location. This will give new hires ample time for training between now and the restaurant’s projected April opening date.
