Philly Neighborhood Stereotypes – Okay, They Are Pretty True
Stereotypes are often derided, but there’s a saying about them that holds water… stereotypes are usually at least a little bit true. The same goes for Philadelphia neighborhoods. The City of Brotherly Love may be big, but it often doesn’t feel that way, thanks to the fact that each of the many neighborhoods within is its own microcosm and ‘hood pride is strong. What types of things are associated with your Philadelphia neighborhood?
Northern Liberties / Fishtown
Hipsters. Hipsters everywhere. Comparable to Williamsburg in Brooklyn. Stuffed full of trendy lofts with soaring prices thanks to gentrification and massive migration of young, cool people with tattoos. Bike heaven. Minor but growing population of yuppies as the cost of living here goes up. Best craft beer in the city. Dining and entertainment are fab.
University City
Drunk frat boys with expensive cars trying to run you over in the crosswalks. Okay, so this one isn’t fair. For the most part, University City is just an average college town within a big city. Huge, airy quads invite students (and visitors) to gather. One of the safest places to live in the city, thanks to campus security, although definitely not appealing to families with kids. Bar-hopping is a perennial activity. Skews very young in demographics, naturally, but also super diverse.
Rittenhouse Square / Washington Square
Holy big money, Batman! Yes, it’s true. These areas are super chic, with boutiques, art galleries, and five-star hotels that can be a bit intimidating if you don’t have some major coin in your pocket. Construction is seemingly endless, and the traffic sucks big time. Still an amazing place to live, if it’s in your budget.
Bella Vista
Little Italy, amazing food, lots of families. The schools are decent and this is a great place to bring up a family. Closest thing to a suburban atmosphere within the big city.
