Man, the prom has become something entirely different from when I was in high school. I didn’t attend that specific rite of passage, but it seems like, as the years go by, this dance becomes something bigger and bigger. Nowadays “promposals” are a thing, girls are wearing designer couture to the event, and teens are constantly trying to one-up each other on excess to celebrate this one night. Well, pack it in, boys and girls. It seems like Johnny Eden Jr. of Northern Philly has outdone everyone.
Eden’s outrageous prom made national news over the weekend. His mother, Saudia Shuler, said that she had been thinking about bringing Johnny to Dubai for a visit. Instead, she brought Dubai to Philly for a pre-prom block party in which the whole neighborhood got involved. Shuler imported three tons of sand and a camel for the Middle Eastern theme, which was a nod to Eden’s devout Muslim heritage.
As for the prom itself, Eden brought three dates in three separate luxury cars, which included a Rolls Royce and a Lamborghini. The girls each wore a custom-designed gown, and Eden changed oufits himself to coordinate with each of his “babies.” No word on how he split up his time with his ladies.
Shuler said that she is proud of her son, who is graduating with a 3.8 GPA from Simon Gratz Mastery Charter and plays basketball on the school team. She recently beat cancer and recovered from a stroke, and she says she promised herself that, if she survived, she was going to do something big to honor her son’s hard work and dedication to her and to his schoolwork.
“I was on my death bed a few years ago,” she told the local CBS affiliate. “My son took it real hard. He believed in Allah so bad. He is Muslim, I am not. So that is what kept him strong.”
