I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream. Especially in these times of protests, contentious Cabinet confirmations, and general political turmoil, who couldn’t go for the cold comfort of a sweet frozen treat to dull their woes? If you are feeling revolutionary and need some extra calories to fuel your rage, the Franklin Fountain ice cream shop in Old City has just the answer for you. Enter the “ImPeach Sundae.” Named, obviously, for the (currently internet-petition-based) movement to impeach the current president for emoluments – a word that I only just figured out how to pronounce yesterday – or just generally for breathing the same air as us, the sundae is one that lampoons Donald Trump on multiple levels.
The main dish is homemade peach ice cream, as the name suggests, covered in “nuts from the cabinet.” Judging from the picture, there’s walnuts, pistachios, almonds, and more. The dish is served with a side of the seasonal exclusive savory tomato ice cream – it’s orange! – which is topped with Cheetos. I would call the whole thing a sick burn, but definitely more of a freezer burn.
Eric Berley, the co-owner of Franklin Fountain, said that he has plans for other politically-motivated confections on the menu. Next up: a bastani sonnati, which is a traditional Persian ice cream, in a saffron flavor with pistachio and rose. Berley calls the treats a “soft protest” against Trump and his unpopular immigration bans on arrivals from seven Muslim-majority countries. The Berley family has a history of commenting on both local- and national-level politics with its frozen treats. According to Billy Penn: “Last year they made both a Bernie flavor and a Hillary flavor of ice cream, and Berley recalled offering “Nutter Butter Pecan” ice cream and “Al Toblerone Tobenberger” ice cream during the 2007 Philadelphia mayoral election that pitted Democrat Michael Nutter against Republican Al Taubenberger.”
If you want to try the ImPeach Sundae, you’d better act fast: Berley says there are a limited number of servings of the tomato ice cream left.
