While not everyone agrees on the definition of “hipster,” we can agree on one thing – that hipsters are those who stay ahead of trends in clothing, food, and life in general. They are almost always a subset of millennials, and they tend to be younger – in their 20s and early 30s. Apparently, they are also trailblazers in real estate as well. Website RealtyTrac recently released a list entitled “Top 30 Hipster Zips for Profitable Home Flips.” Surprisingly, Philadelphia’s hipsters topped the list. Three Philadelphia neighborhoods came in near the top: Kensington, South Philadelphia and Pennsport.
RealtyTrac is a site that tracks real estate trends around the country. When talking about places where hipsters like to live, the site stated that “they are looking for a place that matches their particular vision of what a city, a neighborhood and a home should look, sound, feel, smell and taste like.” To attain that vision, RealtyTrac goes on, hipsters are willing to pay a premium to get the home of their dreams. That willingness represents a boon for any neighborhood that is coveted by hipsters.
Plenty of hot hipster neighborhoods exist in “urban cores,” as RealtyTrac put it, with plenty of older homes that are ripe for flipping. It’s little surprise that millennials are getting in on the home-flipping game: it’s been around almost as long as houses have ever been for sale. What’s notable is the choice of neighborhoods where hipsters flock to flip. Tops on the list was the 55408 zip code of Minneapolis, Minnesota. Filling out the top five were 29403 of Charleston, South Carolina, 60611 of Chicago, Illinois, 19146 of Philadelphia (yay!), and 22305 of Alexandria, Virginia. Two more Philly neighborhoods rounded out the top 7. All told, Philadelphia appeared on the top 30 list 5 times.
