It’s hard to believe, but the holiday season is right around the seasonal corner. Kohl’s, a popular department store, is expanding same-day delivery service into Philadelphia and a host of other cities, just in time for the Christmas shopping rush. The hope is that the same-day service will make online shopping more appealing to consumers. Kohl’s runs more than fifteen stores in the Greater Philadelphia region. This includes stores in Bensalem, Cherry Hill, Exton, and Warminster.
Kohl’s is taking a page from the playbook of Macy’s, another major department store that has unrolled expanded same-day delivery options in several U.S. cities. It will partner with Deliv, a service similar to Uber that hires independent drivers to ferry items between stores/malls and customer homes.
Experts have forecasted a trend of brick-and-mortar stores aggressively pushing their online shopping options this holiday season and boosting that with attractive delivery options like ordering online and picking up in the store, as well as same-day delivery. Amazon.com is, of course, the biggest competitor. The pros say that stores actually have somewhat of an advantage when it comes to same-day delivery, since local stores can serve as fulfillment hubs. Online shopping has accounted for an increased percentage of consumer holiday shopping in the past several years, and same-day delivery makes for the best of both worlds: the ease of shopping comfortably from home with the “I want it now” mentality of picking something out in the store and bringing it home right away.
In addition to Philadelphia, Kohl’s will also offer same-day delivery in Boston, Brooklyn/Queens, Los Angeles, Miami and Northern New Jersey within the next few weeks. The store has run a pilot program of the service in San Francisco, the Bay Area and Chicago.
