There might soon be a gorgeous new boutique hotel in Center City.
Per a proposal submitted by Councilman Kenyatta Johnson, the 300-room Hudson Hotel could rise at the corner of 17th Street and Chancellor. It would replace Little Pete’s, the iconic diner known as a local late-night hangout, as well as a run-down eyesore of a parking garage. It would cost $125 mil and be developed and built by Clemons Construction, which has built hotels all around the world. It would be designed by DAS Architects, the firm that designed The Granary apartments and and the Reeds at Shelter Haven in Stone Harbor.
The ordinance introduced by Johnson would allow the 1600 block to be rezoned, making way for the 12-story hotel.
In addition to lodging, the hotel building would offer two floors of what the proposal statement termed “exciting food and beverage options,” shops, and gorgeous city views. Of the 300 rooms, 40 would be stunning executive suites. There would be meeting and event space within the hotel, as well as underground parking.
As proposed, construction would begin on the project in Spring 2015, with an estimated completion date of 2016. The Hudson would be only the newest of several fresh high-end lodging projects in Center City, including the Home2Suites near the convention center and the W and Element hotels expected next year.
Upon hearing the news break late last week, locals immediately took to Twitter to lament the seemingly-inevitable demise of Little Pete’s, a cherished institution renowned for slinging delicious late-night fare. There’s no word yet on whether the Hudson Hotel spells the end of Little Pete’s or if a move could be in its future.
