The Future Of Penn’s Landing
Exciting news for the country’s worst used waterfront real estate. The Delaware River Waterfront Corporation and Hargreaves Associates have begun the initial plans for Penn’s Landing Park, that would span from Chestnut Street to Walnut Street, from Front Street to the river’s edge. The bridge will extend over Columbus Boulevard via a curving path that will replace the Great Plaza, between Walnut and Chestnut Streets, with a sloping park in the process. Drawings show an upper park and a lower park, connected by a series of grades and slopes. The upper park will feature tons of trees, and the lower park will be an open lawn space for festivals, concerts and beautiful views of the bridge. One possibility shows a floating barge for public swimming, water edge restaurants, water taxi’s, and repositioning of current docked ships. These ideas are far from set in stone and have a long ways to go still. Some say these plans have been in the works for decades and nothing was ever done to move them along further. The projected project is the largest within the Central Delaware Master Plan, the city’s plan to better connect the city and the Delaware River.
