Starr Garden is Philadelphia’s first and oldest playground. Established in 1905, it features a recreation center, two playgrounds, a large field, a picnic area, a basketball court, beautiful trees, a fountain, murals and a sculpture. Towering, shady trees make this park a slice of comfort during the hot summer months, when a cool breeze ripples across the play equipment and children are active on every available surface. The most popular aspects of Star Garden include the jungle gym, the basketball court, and the Little League baseball diamond, which hosts teams throughout the season in the early evenings.
Eat: Plan a picnic lunch! Because of the extensive shady and grassy areas, it’s a perfect spot to head with your kids and plan a picnic lunch. Plus there are ample picnic tables. If you don’t bring one from home, Blackbird Pizzeria is close, as is Creperie Beau-Monde and PretzelPicnic.
Read: Head to the inner courtyard, which has plenty of benches, a nice garden, Mosaic work, and steel statues. If you just want a place to recharge in nature, than this is a inviting spot to crack open a book and read.
Do something. The recreation center has loads of options for children of all ages, so ask for a schedule and find a class or activity that fits your fancy!
