Coxe Park Historic Nomination Denied
The Philadelphia Historical Commission voted last week, in a 7-4 ruling, against historic designation for Coxe Park in Logan Square. In their decision, the historical commission expressed concerns about using historical designation strategically to settle neighborhood disputes. The dispute involving Coxe Park began when a local neighborhood group (of mostly parents), the Friends of Coxe Park, started raising money and awareness in an attempt to renovate the aging park and playground (so their kids don’t get hurt on the outdated equipment). Tully Speaker and Thomas E. Malone, two Logan Square residents, subsequently submitted the historic designation request to prevent changes to the park “that would make it less desirable for residents and destroy its architectural value.” Although the decision is a win for the Friends of Coxe Park, a grant from the Community Design Collaborative that would have paid for a conceptual study for changes in the park was lost in the process. Reasonable people can obviously disagree about Coxe Park’s historical status but I think we can all agree that using the historical commission as a weapon to settle neighborhood disputes is unethical and frankly embarrassing for those involved.
