Philadelphia Giving Away Free Trees
Philly.com reports that the City of Philadelphia is offering 4,000 free trees to city residents in Center City neighborhoods. The City of Philadelphia Parks & Recreation Department is beginning the “TreePhilly” yard-tree giveaway as part of the Greenworks Philadelphia goal of adding 300,000 trees to Philadelphia’s inventory. Wells Fargo is contributing $75,000 as TreePhilly’s sponsor. Species include flowering dogwood, crab apple, sweet bay magnolia, serviceberry and sour cherry trees, all of which eventually reach 25 to 30 feet; and sugar maple, river birch and oak trees, which grow to 70 to 80 feet.
