By now it seems like everyone in Philly already knows about Federal Donuts but for those who don’t, or for those living in other cities here’s the scoop:
Federal Donuts is a new take out shop located at 1219 S. 2nd Street in the Pennsport neighborhood that has become famous, nearly overnight, for serving fried chikcen, donuts and top notch coffee. Federal Donuts is owned and operated by former Headhouse square neighbors Steve Cook and Michael Solomonov (of BODHI Coffee and Zahav fame….for a really sad story about a Solomonv’s remarkable journey click here). The restaurant is so popular that on its first day in business, Federal Donuts ran out of its “fancy” doughnuts by 11 a.m. and by noon was giving away what little fried chicken was left. In a truly stand up move, the owners took down the email addresses of all those who showed up and later emailed them offering them the opportunity to return and get two free donuts. I personally went over to sample the goods and I can attest that the donuts and chicken are amazing and the iced coffee is truly spectacular.
Pennsport is a neighborhood in the South Philadelphia section of Philadelphia. Pennsport neighborhood is bound by Passyunk Square to the west, the Delaware River to the east, Queen Village neighborhood to the north, and Whitman to the south. The Pennsport Redevelopment Area Plan of 1968 listed the border streets as Washington Avenue on the north, Snyder Avenue on the south, and Fourth Street on the west.
