Local Artists Beautify Powelton Village Exteriors
Philadelphia Real Estate Blog – Powelton Village Drexel UniversityPhilly.com reports that local artists are using their art to beautify Powelton Village building fronts. This fall, 13 vacant windows and buildings along Lancaster Avenue in the Powelton section have been transformed by art. The art display is being partially funded by a $30,000 city grant and will remain in effect until November 30th. The project is sponsored by Drexel University in partnership with the University City District, the People’s Emergency Center, and University City community arts groups.
“Supporters of the program hope it will nudge along an already burgeoning revitalization of the Lancaster Avenue corridor in West Philadelphia, an area long favored by artists. Last spring, organizers called for submissions to dress the building fronts and windows, and 200 people applied, said Blaise Tobia, a Powelton artist and art professor at Drexel. A panel that included two current fellows from the Pew Fellowship in the Arts picked the winners. Building fronts and windows from 34th to 41st Streets have been adorned, and several vacant buildings are serving as temporary galleries alongside the neighborhood’s four permanent ones.”
Powelton Village is the neighborhood adjacent to Drexel University in West Philadelphia. Powelton Village is a national historic district which is part of the University City neighborhood and the generally accepted boundaries are north from Market Street to Spring Garden Street, east to 32nd Street, west to 40th and Spring Garden Streets, and to 44th and Market Streets.
